INNOVATIVE ENGINE TIMING COVER MADE FROM CARBON FIBRE COMPOSITE

A public-private partnership between Ford and the University of Toronto (UT) has resulted in the development of a carbon fibre composite (CFC) timing cover - a breakthrough in powertrain design and manufacturing technology that addresses a wide range of needs in the emerging age of new mobility.
The CFC timing cover was designed, developed and manufactured at Ford's Powertrain Engineering Research and Development Centre (PERDC) in Windsor, Ontario - a facility dedicated to advancing powertrain technologies, alternative fuels and lightweighting. It is the result of a five-year collaborative effort led by Dr Jimi Tjong of the PERDC and Prof Mohini Sain, Director of Biomaterials Processing in UT's Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering (MIE), and Ron Ewert and David Born of Ford Performance Parts (FPP) Engineering.

"The cross-functional efforts on this project have not only brought this product to market, but have created an ever-strengthening relationship between industry, academia and public efforts for future projects like this," said David Born - Ford Performance Engine & Performance Supervisor.

"The engineers and scientists in our collaborative team have extensive knowledge and experience in polymer science and synthesis, fibre and composite manufacturing, mechanical testing of fibres and composites, and fibre recycling from advanced composites.

"Together, we have the combined expertise and are making progress in developing a more sustainable approach to the production of powertrain-related composites."
