An attempt to find the optimal composition of such a matrix has been made by scientists from the Laboratory of Neutron Physics at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), one of whose projects required a material suitable for the safe disposal of metallic radioactive waste, including metallic aluminum. The desired material needed to have low porosity and crack formation, because cracks and pores provide easy ways for water to enter the thickness of cement products.

Taking construction-grade Portland cement as a basis, the scientists studied new composites with organic and inorganic components added to the cement paste. After that, they added aluminum to the compositions so as to evaluate the structural characteristics of the cement paste. As a result, the scientists prepared eight samples using two types of cement with organic (CEM III-A) and inorganic (CEM V-A) additives.

To understand whether the samples contained cracks or cavities, the scientists performed neutron tomography and radiography, which made it possible to provide a high-resolution three-dimensional reconstruction of the internal structure of objects. This allowed them to identify water-containing microvolumes and pores forming clusters up to 0.6–0.8 mm in diameter in the samples with inorganic additives (CEM V-A). Meanwhile, the samples with organic additives (CEM III-A) were characterised by low porosity.

“The studies have shown that organic components, which were added to the cement paste prevented the formation of cracks and pores in the final compositions. Organic compounds soak up the excess of accompanying gases formed in the process of synthesis,” Ivan Zel, researcher at the Laboratory of Neutron Physics, is quoted as saying by the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research.

The results of the study could be used in the development of cement materials for the construction of radioactive waste storage facilities.
