During 2017 to date, reports to the ACCC’s Scamwatch show 1236 people lost nearly $540,000 to scammers using gift cards as payments.

This is a growing trend: in the 2015-16 financial year losses were about $480,000.

“Scammers are increasingly getting their victims to pay with iTunes gift cards as they can quickly on-sell them and pocket the money,” ACCC Deputy Chair Delia Rickard said.

“If someone asks you to pay for anything using an iTunes gift card, it is a scam. There are never any circumstances where a legitimate business or government department will ask for payment this way.”

Apple’s website clearly states iTunes gift cards can only be used to purchase goods and services on the iTunes Store, App Store, iBooks Store, or for an Apple Music membership.The scammers will get their victims to travel to a business where iTunes gift cards are sold, such as a supermarket or department store, and get them to purchase amounts sometimes worth thousands of dollars.

Businesses that sell iTunes gift cards are encouraged to inform their staff about these scams so that they can help warn customers and even question any customers spending large amounts of money on iTunes gift cards.

“The scammers are very persistent once they have a victim hooked and will, for example, keep their victim on the phone while they’re in a store buying the gift cards. Once a victim has bought the card, the scammer will get them to quickly read the serial number on the back—it’s this information they use to then on-sell the gift card,” Ms Rickard said.

“If you pay for a scammer’s con with iTunes gift cards it’s nearly impossible to get your money back. Don’t ever believe the scammer’s lies, no matter how convincing they sound—hang up on their calls and delete their emails immediately.”

Unsuitable hot runner systems usually cause high pressure losses; they should, if used at all, be operated only at very high temperatures. This will usually cause the polymer to degrade, with all the consequences already  mentioned above “Wrong melt temperature”. Streaks, discoloration and surface defects will also be produced, due to local overheating. The resultant decomposition of the moulding compound causes blistering and other undesirable effects due to degradation products.

What points should be considered?
The above-mentioned polymers all display a certain amount of latitude between recommended melt temperature and solidification temperature. It is therefore necessary to effectively thermally isolate the hot runner from the runners and nozzles.

The nozzles should be designed so that naturally balanced runners can be used. This is the only way of ensuring uniform pressure losses and the same melt residence time in all the mould cavities.

In the case of small shot weights, indirect gating is preferable to direct gating, especially with glass fibre reinforced materials. Material throughput per nozzle increases, so that the heat applied to the moulding compound is more easily manageable. Gates for hot runner nozzles can be large, the gate on the moulded part remaining small through conventional gating. A cold slug interceptor should in any case be arranged facing the hot runner nozzle. This is the only way of preventing cold material getting into the moulded part through the nozzle.
Separate controls should be provided for the hot runner inlet, the runner and each nozzle, to enable all parts to be individually balanced with regard to the thermally sensitive moulding compounds. Regulating devices should be used which guarantee constant temperatures through adaptation of the power supply (e.g. PID).

The hot runner system should be mechanically supported in the same way as the ejector system. The mould is weakened near the runners and this must be compensated as much as possible. Separate heating circuits in the immediate vicinity of the hot runner nozzles allow mould surface temperatures to be correctly set independently.Runners with a full cross-section and symmetrically incorporated heat conductors are the best solution. Internally heated systems which only have an annular cross-section cause excessively high pressure losses and should be avoided if at all possible.

In the case of materials with high thermal sensitivity such as POM and flame resistant compounds, the bypass inside the runner should be as perfect as possible.

Nozzles should be open, externally heated systems with a full cross-section. Division of the melt stream into several streams should be avoided in the gate region. Distribution of the connected load should be adapted to conditions in the built-in state, so that there is even temperature distribution. It is an advantage to provide interchangeable nozzle tips in case of abrasive materials having to be processed. In addition, compromises with small torpedoes are possible if necessary.

It is generally inadvisable to use shut-off nozzles when processing POM. If the use of other kinds of compound dictates the use of needle valve nozzles, nozzle/needle combinations should be used which keep pressure losses as low as possible. Many different kinds of hot runner systems are on the market, which give excellent results provided the above recommendations are followed.

Both MillerKnoll Inc. and Steelcase Inc. recently reported reductions in incoming order rates that occurred despite solid quarterly sales gains.

The Zeeland-based MillerKnoll (Nasdaq: MKLN) reported that orders for the recently completed first quarter of fiscal year 2023 declined 17 percent organically from a year earlier in the key Americas business unit and 11 percent globally.

MillerKnoll, after reporting strong gains for the three-month period that ended Aug. 28, now forecasts $1.02 billion to $1.06 billion in sales for the second quarter of FY 2023, a flat or 4-percent growth rate, with 39 cents to 45 cents earnings per share.

Like their counterparts at Steelcase, MillerKnoll executives are seeing clients ease into adapting their offices to the new work environment and taking longer than expected to transition to hybrid work models. The softer order rates occurred despite what MillerKnoll Americas Contract Division President John Michael called “robust activity.”

“If you talk to the dealer network, they’re all incredibly busy. I think some of the things that we’re seeing is a lot of hesitation on the part of customers in terms of pulling the trigger on a new and more hybrid-focused work environment, and probably some hesitation in terms of the size of projects going forward,” Michael said in a Sept. 28 conference call to discuss quarterly results. “That said, most companies that we talk to realize they have to do something, and they’re in the process. It’s an iterative process and it takes a little bit longer to get the order to close than in a pre-pandemic kind of environment.”

As a result of the softer order rate, MillerKnoll is “proactively taking actions, including continued pricing increases and careful management of discretionary spending” and voluntary retirements, President and CEO Andi Owen said. The pending actions should generate annualized cost savings of $30 million to $35 million.
Furniture makers have performed well for several quarters after the initial shock to the economy when the pandemic hit in early 2020. They since “have been seeing some pretty solid numbers,” said Elisa Berger, a vice president at Grand Rapids investment bank Charter Capital Partners who follows the industry.

Given the slowing economy and the cyclical nature of the office furniture industry, the softening order rates are not surprising, Berger said.

“The softening is not going to be shocking to anyone,” she said. “We’ve been on an upswing for about the appropriate amount of time for it to cycle down again.”
Steelcase cuts
At Grand Rapids-based Steelcase (NYSE: SCS), executives recently said they are pursuing cost-cutting moves after incoming orders declined 20 percent in the first few weeks of the present quarter and 8 percent in the prior quarter. The moves will include eliminating up to 180 salaried positions in Steelcase’s corporate and Americas division.

The actions target about $20 million of annualized spending at Steelcase, which reported global sales of $863.3 million for the second quarter of its 2023 fiscal year. That compares to $724.8 million for the same period a year earlier. Quarterly sales for the Americas division that accounts for three quarters of total revenue grew 25 percent to $651.6 million.

Despite the strong sales gains for the quarter, volumes are “not tracking as we originally planned” back in March when Steelcase forecasted “continuing improvements in our overall order patterns,” said Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Dave Sylvester. A slowing U.S. economy and lower CEO sentiment that affects corporate capital spending also contributed to the decision to implement job cuts.

“It’s possible the slow return-to-office trend in the U.S. could be having an impact. It’s also possible that reduced CEO confidence is impacting capital spending in our sector. Decision-makers have a lot to deal with at the moment and they’re also facing a lot of near-term uncertainty,” Sylvester said in a conference call to discuss quarterly results.

What happened to NMN?
On July 25, 2022, Inner Mongolia Kingdomway Pharmaceutical Limited voluntarily submitted an NDI for NMN because the company planned to market an NMN-containing dietary supplement.

However, on October 11, 2022, the FDA sent a letter to Kingdomway regarding the company’s NDI. The FDA document states that “NMN has been authorized for investigation as a new drug” and “may not be marketed as a dietary supplement or as a food.”

The FDA can do this because of the preclusion provision of Section 201(ff) of the Federal, Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Officials created this provision to protect the commercial interests of pharmaceutical companies developing new drugs. It also prevents unscrupulous individuals or groups from bypassing the drug approval process by categorizing their ingredients as dietary supplements.
However, the FDA does not disclose when a pharmaceutical company submits an Investigational New Drug (IND) application. So, it is unclear when NMN was authorized for investigation. This led Kingdomway to question the FDA’s decision.

In a supplemental letter explaining its decision, the FDA wrote, “the evidence on which Kingdomway relies to show that Β-NMN was marketed as a dietary supplement or food before it was authorized as a new drug is too recent, not relevant, or both.”

The FDA cites February 16, 2021, as the first date on which another manufacturer could have marketed its Β-NMN product lawfully after submitting an NDI notification to the agency on December 3, 2020. However, the FDA noted that it’s unclear whether Β-NMN was actually marketed on that date.

The second timeframe the FDA points out is September 2021 — the month that Kingdomway first marketed its NMN-containing whey protein concentrate.
