Lighting and lamps can be surprisingly difficult to buy online. As shopping editors, we spend hours dreaming about stylish table lamps, but when it comes time to click “checkout,” even we sometimes freeze. Though the site’s lamp photos are good, you can’t be sure what it’ll look like in your space or how bright the lamp actually is. We all don’t want to use the “big light” (aka the fluorescent overhead light) in our apartments. We’d rather make our space more welcoming, but that can be difficult to achieve when you’re hunting down lamps online. Will the table lamp you bought provide the right amount of ambient light? Is your floor lamp going to shine down at the exact angle you need to get some reading done? And, barring all that, can you track down the light bulb you need? As your Personal Shopper, we’ve gone to Pottery Barn to evaluate their rugs, bed frames, and sofas; to West Elm for a look at their sofas, dining tables, and coffee tables; and to Urban Outfitters to put their sofas and chairs to the test. This time, we went to Urban Outfitters to check out every lamp and piece of lighting in store. We lingered for an uncomfortably long time, took notes, and even snapped photos to help find the best lighting and lamps for you. Here are the results.
The Criteria
We judged every Urban Outfitters lamp in-store based on the following four criteria, giving each category an average rating between 1 and 5. These scores helped us determine who the lamp suits best, from the person who has little natural light in their space to the trendsetter who is on the hunt for an accent piece.
Aesthetic: What style does it suit best? Is it more traditional (sporting a woven drum lampshade and classic arc or oval base silhouettes) or contemporary (made up of an unusual material, and/or featuring a structural base that looks like a work of art)?

Brightness: How does the lamp’s design light up a space? Does the lamp have shades that soften the light to create a more relaxing, wind-down vibe? Or are the light fixtures unobstructed by shades and bright enough to serve as the primary light in a space?

Versatility: Can you use the lamp in multiple spots in your home (e.g., a desk lamp that could also become an accent lamp in your bedroom)? Or can the lamp only be used in one spot or way (e.g., a floor lamp that’s meant to provide soft, ambient light)?

Jacksonville to begin inspecting recycling bins to make sure items can be recycled

Well, pay attention to it because if you don’t the “Plastic Police” will soon be watching you closely.News4JAX has learned the city is going to start inspecting your recycling bin in May to make sure you’re doing it right.

The idea to inspect your recycling may sound odd and intrusive, but many people that News4JAX spoke to in Arlington don’t have a problem with it.“I think it’s a good idea because I think people have a tendency to throw anything in the recycle bin,” said one resident.

As part of a federal grant, the city is going to use a not-for-profit firm to have people inspect items put in recycling bins.“If there’s some improper materials within the bins, there’ll be a tag placed on the bin to let people know, hey, this is not a proper material to go into your recycle bin. Please correct this behavior,” said Eric Fuller, Environmental Manager of Public Works.

It might surprise some to learn that once you put your trash on the curb, it’s no longer yours. The city can do these inspections without your permission.

“So if people are using the recycle cart as a garbage can, we can’t have that, costs the city money, it contaminates good recyclable materials. So we’re going to warn people and educate them, we’re going to inspect everyone’s cart four times. And if that behavior continues, ultimately we’ll remove their garbage, their recycling cart from the road,” Fuller said.

The city said it made the decision because 20% of the items that are put in recycling bins end up in the landfill, which can be costly.City councilman Ron Salem was instrumental in getting the project launched as part of a half-million-dollar federal grant.

When it starts, it will begin in the city’s urban core and spread out to the rest of Jacksonville in the weeks to follow.So starting next month don’t be alarmed if you see people going through your trash. It may just be the cardboard cops.

The project also includes Shaw Flooring's SensFloor technology, which is a subfloor with built-in sensors that can detect when someone falls and send the appropriate alert for help. Though this project's SensFlooring installation was handled by Shaw's internal team, Diverzify will be training its national workforce on the SensFloor technology in the coming months. This is a part of Diverzify's robust training program provided to its craftsmen in an effort to offer clients the most skilled network of installers in the country. SensFloor is a representation of the industry's bigger trend of having flooring contribute to a building's functionality, not just its aesthetics.

Another example is Underfloor Air Distribution (UFAD), which is offered by Diverzify's Select Prefab Solutions (SPS) location. UFAD transitions traditional clunky, overhead HVAC to a low-profile system located underneath the building's flooring. The results? Improved air quality, reduced energy use, the removal of drop ceilings, and more.

The construction, originally scheduled for 15 months, started in January 2020. Thanks to the hard work and collaboration between the SFMTA and contractor, the project is completed three months ahead of schedule despite a four-week pause due to COVID-19.

Besides replacing five existing bus lifts and adding a new one, the project also replaced seven overhead roll-up doors and two new security gates. The new lifts have the latest safety features and will increase work efficiency by improving access to the bus undercarriage. In the long run, the project will also reduce the transportation system’s resource consumption, emissions, waste and noise. All these things together will enable us to get buses back into service faster.
Maintenance crews work hard to keep our city's Muni buses running every day. In order to improve one of our key facilities and upgrade their work environment, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) is implementing the Presidio Facility Bus Lifts Improvement Project. The project is going to break ground in mid-January 2020. Over approximately 15 months, we will replace and install new heavy-duty vehicle lifts, new overhead roll-up doors, and new security gates in the Presidio facility. Work hours: Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Some weekend work may occur as needed. The project is limited within the bus maintenance yard and does not directly impact transit service or the public right of way. Measures will be taken to limit noise and dust, including during concrete demolitions.

The SFMTA's Presidio Maintenance Facility is a 5.75-acre site located in the Laurel Heights neighborhood of San Francisco. At Presidio, the SFMTA maintains a fleet of approximately 165, 40-foot electric trolley buses. The facility provides preventative maintenance and light body repair of the vehicles. The existing bus lifts were installed in the mid-80’s and are beyond the end of their useful life. The existing lifts break down frequently, impacting the staff’s ability to maintain buses and keep them in service.

The modifications entailed in this project will improve workers’ safety by installing new lifts that have the latest safety features, increase work efficiency by improving access to the bus undercarriage, and reduce infrastructure maintenance requirements. In the long run, the project will reduce the transportation system’s resource consumption, emissions, waste and noise. All these things together should help us get buses back into service faster.
