Cordless Blinds Regulations Now Being Enforced

Canada’s Corded Window Coverings Regulations were originally passed in 2019, with a May 2021 target date for implementation. The regulations were designed to eliminate strangulation risks to children due to dangling cords on many window blinds and shades. More than a year ago, Health Canada said it would focus on awareness rather than enforcement in the first year of the new requirements after industry lobbying to delay implementation. The new regulations limit the length and “pull force” of any cord on a window covering product. Any free-hanging cord or tethered cord cannot exceed 22 cm, and no cord (including inner cords) can produce a loop larger than 44 cm.

The regulations apply to all products made, imported or sold in Canada, whether sold in-store or online. In its release announcing the enforcement implementation, Health Canada asserted that it worked closely with the Canada Border Services Agency to prevent non-compliant products entering Canada.

As part of the compliance verification, “establishments that sell window coverings will be inspected and products will be sampled from various levels of trade both online and in store.” The samples would be evaluated at Health Canada facilities with non-compliant items subject to “enforcement actions based on the level of risk posed by the non-compliance(s)”, which could include recalls and prosecution.
The new regulations followed many years of policy development.

However, lobbying from the Retail Council of Canada and other industry participants pushed back on the implementation of the new safety regulations from 2021 until 2022. Retailers cited difficulties in understanding the testing requirements as well as supply chain issues related to COVID-19.

The integration is intended to celebrate and strengthen ongoing research at Scripps Florida, which has a stellar global reputation, while leveraging opportunities to explore avenues of mutual interest and providing Scripps with a strong clinical partner. To build on the excellent scientific work taking place to more expediently unlock clinical advances that improve outcomes for patients in the state and around the world, officials from both organizations said.

“We are excited to work collaboratively with our colleagues at Scripps to rapidly take discoveries made at the bench to the bedside, where they can have the most benefit to humanity,” said David R. Nelson, MD, senior vice president for health affairs at UF and president of UF Health, the university’s academic health center. “We are looking forward to cultivating a culture of innovation that will extend from the outstanding science already underway.”

As part of the agreement, Scripps will transfer all assets associated with the 30-acre Scripps Florida campus in Jupiter, situated within Palm Beach County’s innovation corridor — property, buildings, equipment and adjacent 70-acre tract to the University of Florida. The campus, one of the top National Institutes of Health-supported research centers in the state, includes more than 40 faculty-led laboratories supported by a 500-member team dedicated to understanding an array of illnesses and seeking to generate effective treatments.

In addition, UF and UF Health have committed to work with Scripps Florida leadership to immediately invest in the new entity by hiring additional faculty; these new recruits will come on board within the next five years and will complement the existing talented pool of scientists there, possibly expanding efforts in the artificial intelligence domain by hiring faculty focused on areas such as data science and AI. Other natural areas of collaboration with colleagues in other parts of UF Health potentially include cancer, drug discovery, immunology and infectious disease, neuroscience (including Alzheimer’s and other aging-related diseases, as well as autism), HIV/AIDS, and structural biology and molecular medicine.

“I would like to thank our Board member Dr. Herbert Wertheim on behalf of Scripps Research for making this unique partnership possible for Scripps and the University of Florida by taking this opportunity directly to President Fuchs. Without his effort and commitment, this transfer would not be happening. Scripps Florida researchers are regularly heralded for their pioneering discoveries that have led to hundreds of patents and numerous spinoff companies. They are behind a robust research profile, with nearly $50 million in NIH funding and over $67 million in total research funding, which includes industry support.

As part of the arrangement, a site director and local leadership council will be appointed for the entity, which will be organized and operated independently and report to Nelson. Scripps scientists will join the UF faculty and also will retain an additional Scripps title.

If you have a desk full of cards, you might want to save a copy of the file on your computer and have it handy so you can simply hold the cards up to your screen. Just remember to have the zoom on the PDF set to 100% so that the sizing is accurate. This should also work on your phone as well.

To use the gauge, hold your card up to it starting at the top. If your card is thicker, keep moving down until you get the right size. Remember, some memorabilia cards stick out a bit so you’ll want to take that into account.

We liked the warmth of the color, the bright light output, and the manageable wires. Solihull Council has secured funds, with leading autonomous technology provider Conigital, for a pioneering development project which will see automated shuttles ferrying passengers between Birmingham International rail station and Birmingham Business Park through the NEC Birmingham, seeking to establish a new permanent commercial route.

The proposed route forms a key part of a wider project being overseen by a regional consortium led Conigital. The Multi-Area Connected Automated Mobility (MACAM) project will also see a similar route rolled out between Coventry rail station and Coventry University campus.

The two new routes will be served by a mixed fleet of 13 automated shuttles and underpinned by a new centralised, Remote Monitoring Teleoperation (RMTO) centre operated by Transport for West Midlands. The RMTO centre will be used to monitor the project’s automated vehicles and (when required) control them, using 5G connectivity. The landmark project aims to make self-driving vehicle operations commercially viable and offset current technology and operator costs.

A total of £42 million has been awarded by government and then matched by private industry to fund a range of projects across the country, intended to demonstrate sustainable commercial CAV services by 2025. As part of the Conigital led MACAM project in the West Midlands, Solihull Council is expected to receive £279,260 of grant-funding to include revenue for project managing vehicle deployment within Solihull, as well as capital funds for installing roadside technology to allow effective operation of the vehicles. Additional funds have also been secured to carry out an early feasibility study into providing a CAV service between East Birmingham North Solihull (EBNS) as part of a separate project. This will look at the proposed EBNS transit corridor which could connect the forthcoming HS2 Interchange Station in Solihull to Birmingham City Centre.

Solihull Council has already established itself as a key player in this emerging sector. In 2021 it became the first local authority in the country to purchase its own electric and fully autonomous shuttle, using a grant from the Greater Birmingham & Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership (GBSLEP). Since then, successful passenger trials have been carried out at both Birmingham Airport and the NEC, where the shuttle was also used in the Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton Relay. Building on the success of these deployments, there are plans for further trials with the shuttle to get underway at Birmingham Business Park next later this month.

Aiming to ensure the material’s broadest possible use in the food and beverage industry, rigorous testing was undertaken, including tests to prove the material’s compatibility with process and cleaning media according to DIN ISO 1817. These involved testing materials in numerous media, including sodium hydroxide 2%, steam, alkaline and acidic cleaners, at elevated temperatures for 168 hours. FoodProTM E75F1 demonstrated good or very good performance with all cleaning agents tested, retaining hardness and tensile strength, while exhibiting little volume change.

FoodProTM E75F1 is a 70 shore EPDM universal sealing material for static and semi-dynamic food applications, such as separators, decanters, valves, pipe couplings and heat exchangers, in any type of seal design, from standard O-Rings and gaskets to multicomponent parts.

The material is compression and injection moldable into complex geometries and withstands surface imperfections in applications. It is specifically developed for use in high-temperature dairy processing, including infant formula.

SVG Gives FX Brokers until March 10 to Show License as Fraud Claims Jump

Presently, the non-bank financial services regulator requires prospective forex brokers that want to be incorporated or formed in the Caribbean country to provide the same license from regulators of the jurisdictions where their business activities will be conducted.
The SVG markets supervisor disclosed these conditions in a notice sent to registered agents and trustees. The notice is named, “Requirements for Business Companies (BCs) and Limited Liability Companies (LLCs) Engaging in FOREX Business Activity.” The notice was signed by the regulator’s Registrar of BCs and LLCs.
A formal notice was published last Friday, January 6, by the Financial Services Authority (FSA) of Saint Vincent & the Grenadines (SVG) regarding a new set of requirements for Business Companies (BCs) and Limited Liability Companies (LLCs) engaging in FOREX business activities. The said notice provides for the following with immediate effect:
• Companies that wish to engage in FOREX activity need to provide a certified copy of the requisite licences from the jurisdiction(s) where their business activities will be performed.
• Companies that are already registered in SVG and engage in FOREX activity will be provided 45 days (until March 10, 2023) to provide the FSA with a certified copy of the requisite licences from the jurisdiction(s) where their business activities will be performed.
The financial watchdog said the new policy is its response to the sharp increase in the frequency and number of complaints and allegations of fraud against forex trading firms and offshore brokers in the country. In addition, the regulator decried the “potential detrimental effects” of the trend on SVG’s reputation as an international financial centre.

“Failure to adhere to these requirements will result in the application of sanctions against the companies in accordance with the Financial Services Authority Act,” the regulator explained.

Furthermore, the authority urged registered agents and trustees to “continue to apply sound Anti-Money Laundering/Counter-Financing of Terrorism practices in ensuring that adequate screening measures and appropriate due dilligence measures are utilized, on a risk-sensitive basis, when onboarding clients (Directors, Shareholders and Beneficial Owners) who wish to incorporate/form companies in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.”
How Will the New Policy Affect FX Trading in Saint Vincent?
Over the years, St. Vincent and the Grenadines' Financial Services Authority has been laying the groundwork to implement its own set of regulations to rein in bad actors tarnishing the Island country's image with unscrupulous business practices. Is the new policy going in that direction?

"[the new policy] is a clear message from the regulator that they only want forex businesses that are already regulated in stricter jurisdictions to apply for a license. The question going forward is: How many of these regulators will follow suit?" Chris Rowe, a UK-based fintech consultant, told Finance Magnates.
It is always bad for any global industry to have very varied regulatory requirements across different regions of the world, so it was just a matter of time before SVG took this action," Higgins said.

On implementation of the policy, Rowe believes that while adapting with the policy will be "more of a paperwork exercise" for large brokers that are already regulated in multiple jurisdictions, it is now paramount for brokers with only a St. Vincent license to get regulated elsewhere. "Jurisdictions such as Mauritius and Seychelles will take over from St. Vincent as the offshore license [destination] of choice," he added.

However, both experts criticized the time frame provided by the SVG regulator, with Higgins noting that "even legitimate brokers may find it hard to provide all of the documentation by March 10th."

"It is unlikely that any broker with only a St Vincent license would apply for an FCA, CySEC or ASIC license as an alternative because the capital requirements and timescales to set these up will be prohibitive. There is no way that you would be able to apply for these licenses from scratch and have them in place by 10th March 2023!" Rowe added.
